Being diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is quite a struggle. It is characterized by persistent intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors that can interfere with work, school, relationships, and everyday life. Bio Psychiatry Therapeutic Services offers evidence-based, compassionate, telepsychiatry treatment for OCD to children, adults, and seniors in Maryland, Washington, DC, and surrounding areas.
We recognize OCD is a medical condition, and we know that it’s not a personality trait; it is not something that can be stopped. We can support them to reduce symptoms and live a better life through psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and continued support through customized care.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by recurring obsessions and compulsions that can become difficult to control.
An obsession is an intrusive, unwanted thought, image, or urge that creates anxiety or distress for the person who is experiencing it. These may include:
Compulsions are thoughts or repetitive actions that are performed in order to alleviate anxious feelings or to block out some undesirable event. Common compulsions include:
People with OCD are aware that it is too much, but are not able to stop it. While intrusive thoughts can raise symptoms of OCD, they aren’t who you are, and can be helped to have a smaller effect through treatment.
You may benefit from a professional evaluation if you:
If any of the above symptoms resonate with you, consulting a professional psychiatrist will help you find out more about your condition and what it means for your treatment options.
At Bio Psychiatry Therapeutic Services, your treatment plan will be custom-made, based on your goals, symptoms, and needs.
Evidence-Based Therapy
Treatment methods such as Evidence-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), currently the most effective psychotherapy for OCD, are supported. With ERP, people start to address their fears slowly, gradually begin to avoid compulsive behaviors, and over time, the anxiety diminishes.
We also treat other disorders that often accompany OCD: anxiety, depression, and trauma-related disorders.
Medication Management
Medication may be indicated for your treatment as part of your therapy plan, as appropriate. If you have symptoms that are causing you to suffer, our psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner will decide if medication such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can be used to alleviate your symptoms. Regularly reviewing your progress closely and making appropriate treatment changes when necessary to promote lifelong health and wellness.
