School Issues Support

Empowering Students to Thrive Academically and Emotionally

School can be a tough road—for students and their families. It can be anything from falling grades and poor concentration to dropping out of school, test anxiety, classroom misbehavior, or social issues, all of which negatively impact confidence and can lead to further effects at home. Bio Psychiatry Therapeutic Services offers practical, individualized use of telepsychiatry to restore motivation, resilience, and success for students without the need for inconvenient in-person visits, and to identify the causes of issues in school.

What Are School Issues?

School issues are not typically “laziness” or “adjustment issues”. They frequently stem from deeper mental health, neurodevelopment, or emotional problems such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, learning differences, or trauma or family stress. If these issues are not resolved, then they can impact self-esteem, peer relationships, and future opportunities.

Common indicators we work with to make things better:

A pattern of persistent school refusal or avoidance.

  • Difficulty organizing work and activities, initiating and carrying out tasks
  • Poor grades even though trying hard
  • School refusal or anxiety (plane to avoid school or fear of returning to school)
  • Difficulties or problems with behavior in the classroom/with teachers/peers
  • Lack of motivation, perfectionism, or fear of failure.
  • Difficulties with relationships, withdrawn or bullied behavior

Our thorough psychiatric evaluations help differentiate between temporary setbacks and deeper issues, paving the way for targeted solutions.

Our Personalized Approach to School Success

We provide flexible, high-quality care from right in your house via secure telehealth. Each treatment plan is specifically designed for a student based on their family/school context, strengths and challenges, and age.

1.     Targeted Psychotherapy & Skills Building

  • Child-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for school anxiety, perfectionism, and negative self-talk.

  • Executive functioning coaching to enhance organizational skills, time management, planning, and study skills.

  • Strategies addressing behavioral issues, such as gradual re-entry programs, positive reinforcement programs, and avoiding handling the issue of the child’s refusal to go to school as a major threat.

  • Communication skills and socio-emotional learning to enhance peer and teacher relationships.

2.     Psychiatric Medication Management (When needed)

Our board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner thoroughly evaluates and monitors medication management for various other conditions, such as ADHD, anxiety, or mood disorders, that have an impact on learning and concentration. Close monitoring and the lowest effective dose are crucial.

3.     Family & School Collaboration

Parents are heavily engaged in the process, and where applicable, home schools are linked for 504, IEP, or teacher communication. The consistent routine, positive reinforcement in the home, motivating tools that enable family participation and advocacy in their child’s learning are stressed.
